The difference between ghusl and wudu

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Sister, we are pleased to hear that you have reverted to Islam. May Allah keep you steadfast on Islam. Ameen!

  1. 1.      GHUSL

  1.   simply means to take a bath or a shower. However, in Islam there is a specific manner of taking a ghusl. The method of performing ghusl for men and woman is the same. There are 3 compulsory acts in performing ghusl.
  2. Rinsing the mouth thoroughly
  3. Putting water up the nostrils

    1. Pouring water over the entire body. Women are not required to untangle or unbraid their hair while performing ghusl. It is sufficient to ensure that the water reaches the roots of the hair.
If any of the 3 acts of ghusl are left out, ghusl will not be valid.
There are certain scenarios in which ghusl becomes compulsory upon a woman.
  1. After her menses have terminated
  2. After having intimate relationship with her husband
  3. After having a wet dream
If a woman wishes to perform ghusl for any other reason besides these 3 scenarios (i.e. to cool off the body etc.), she may do so without having to follow the 3 compulsory acts of Ghusl.

WUDU

which is known as ablution means to purify certain limbs of the body which have been specified by Sharia’h. The method of performing wudu is the same for men and women. There are 4 compulsory acts in wudhu:
  1. Anything which falls within the circumference of the face from one earlobe to the other and from the tip of the forehead to the chin will have to be washed.
  2. Washing both the arms up to the elbows. Elbows will also be included in the washing.
  3. Performing masah of 1/4th of the head. Masah means to pass wet hands over 1/4th of the head. This should not be confused with washing. The head will not be washed. Rather, it will simply be wipedwith wet hands.
  4. Washing both the feet up to the ankles. The ankles will be included in the washing.
If any of the acts of wudu are left out, wudu will not be valid.
There are certain acts which will nullify ones wudu.
  1. Passing urine, excretion, or anything else from the private parts.
  2. Passing of wind/gas
  3. Flowing of blood or pus from any part of the body
  4. Vomiting in mouthful
  5. Falling asleep while lying down or by resting the body against another object
  6. Becoming unconscious/fainting due to whatever reason
  7. Becoming insane/mad
  8. Laughing while in Salah.
  1. 2.     The procedure of performing ghusl after menstruation is the same as mentioned above.
  1. 3.     Women do not have to perform ghusl everyday unless if the above mentioned 3 scenarios happen to take place which obligates the ghusl.
  1. 4.     If ghusl has not become compulsory upon you, you may take a bath/shower in any manner you like. You will not be required to wash your hair in this case.
